How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is one 200 mg tablet five times a day for 5 days, or one 800 mg tablet five times a day for 7 days, depending on the infection. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Important

Do not take more than 4000 mg (five 800 mg tablets) in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Itching, rashes (including sensitivity to light)
  • Tiredness, fever
RARE
  • Hives, hair loss
  • Sudden allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Temporary increase in bilirubin and liver enzyme levels
  • Angioedema (e.g., sudden swelling of the face or tongue)
  • Increase in blood urea and creatinine levels
  • Lack of red or white blood cells or platelets (anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Agitation, confusion, tremors, problems with movement coordination (ataxia), speech difficulties (dysarthria), hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, seizures, drowsiness, brain disorder (encephalopathy), coma
  • Liver inflammation, possibly with yellow skin (jaundice)
  • Acute kidney failure, kidney pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Aclovir if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are over 65 years old or have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, especially probenecid, cimetidine, or mycophenolate mofetil.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars (like lactose, found in 200 mg and 400 mg tablets), talk to them before taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
