How to Use

Dosage

For adults with herpes simplex infections, typically one 200 mg tablet five times a day.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with water, exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has advised.

Important

Do not take more than 4000 mg (five 800 mg tablets) in one day.

  • Trouble breathing
  • Temporary changes in liver tests (bilirubin, liver enzymes)
  • Swelling of the face or tongue (angioedema)
  • Changes in kidney tests (urea, creatinine)
  • Problems with blood cells (e.g., anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Feeling restless or confused
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Problems with movement coordination (ataxia)
  • Speech problems (dysarthria)
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), mental problems (psychotic symptoms)
  • Seizures
  • Feeling very sleepy
  • Brain problems (encephalopathy), coma
  • Liver inflammation, possibly with yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Sudden kidney failure, kidney pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Aclovir if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Aclovir if you are over 65 years old or have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines you are taking, especially probenecid, cimetidine, or mycophenolate mofetil.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • If you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars (e.g., lactose), talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
