How to Use

Dosage

Take one 20 mg capsule daily.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not chew or crush it. If you have trouble swallowing, open the capsule, mix the pellets into half a glass of water, and drink immediately. Rinse the glass with water and drink that too.

Important

No more than 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache.
  • Stomach problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, and gas.
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting).
  • Harmless growths in the stomach.
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles.
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia).
  • Dizziness, tingling or numbness, sleepiness.
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo).
  • Dry mouth.
  • Changes in liver blood tests.
  • Skin rash, hives and itchy skin.
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, spine) if used for a long time.
  • Blood problems like low white blood cells or platelets, leading to weakness, bruising, or more infections.
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, causing weakness, vomiting, and cramps.
  • Feeling restless, confused, or depressed.
  • Changes in taste.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath.
  • Mouth inflammation or fungal infection in the gut (thrush).
  • Liver problems like jaundice, which can make skin yellow, urine dark, and cause tiredness.
  • Hair loss.
  • Skin rash after sun exposure.
  • Joint or muscle pain.
  • General feeling of being unwell and lack of energy.
  • Increased sweating.
  • Very severe skin rashes, like blisters, peeling skin, high fever, and joint pain.
  • Enlarged breasts in men.
  • Kidney problems.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Aggression.
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that aren't there).
  • Severe liver problems that can lead to liver failure and brain swelling.
  • Inflammation of the gut (causes diarrhea).
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to esomeprazole or similar medicines.
  • Do not use if you are taking nelfinavir (a medicine for HIV infection).
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, vomiting (especially with blood), or black stools.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you develop a severe rash, blisters, or peeling skin.

  • If you get a rash from sun exposure, tell your doctor.
  • If you use Acidal for more than 3 months, your magnesium levels might drop. Tell your doctor if you feel tired, have muscle twitching, confusion, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat.
  • Using this medicine for over a year might slightly increase your risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis.
  • Acidal should not be used during breastfeeding.
  • If you feel dizzy or your vision blurs, do not drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
