How to Use

Dosage

Adults: 5-10 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours. Children (over 3 months): 10-20 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours. Newborns: 20 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given by a healthcare professional as a slow injection into a vein (IV infusion) over at least one hour.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to aciclovir or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or kidney pain. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Drink enough fluids during treatment, especially if you have kidney problems or are taking high doses, to prevent kidney issues.
  • This medicine can interact with other medicines, especially those that can harm your kidneys, lithium (for mood), or theophylline (for breathing). Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking. Also, avoid mixing this medicine with other injections in the same IV line, as it may crystallize.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. It is usually not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor says so, and you should avoid breastfeeding during treatment.
