How to Use

Dosage

Adults: 5–10 mg per kg every 8 hours. Children over 3 months: 10–20 mg per kg every 8 hours, maximum 400–800 mg per dose. Newborns: 20 mg per kg every 8 hours.

Method

A doctor or nurse will administer this medicine to you as a slow infusion directly into a vein, taking at least one hour.

Important

The maximum dose depends on weight and the condition being treated. For children, the maximum dose is 800 mg every 8 hours in certain cases, implying a daily maximum if given three times a day.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to aciclovir or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • If you experience back pain around the kidney area, this could be a sign of kidney problems. Your doctor might consider stopping the treatment.
  • Remember to drink enough fluids during treatment, especially if you are receiving the medicine intravenously or high oral doses.
  • If you are taking other medicines that can harm your kidneys at the same time, the risk of kidney problems may increase.

  • Avoid mixing aciclovir with other medicines in the same infusion bag, as it may crystallize.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor. This medicine is generally not used during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
  • Avoid breastfeeding during treatment, as the medicine can pass into breast milk.
