How to Use

Dosage

The dose is individual. Your doctor will choose the right dose for you based on your weight and how the medicine affects you.

Method

Acetylcysteine Macure is given slowly as an infusion directly into a vein. Usually, a doctor or nurse will give it to you.

Important

The loading dose is 200 mg per kg of body weight over 4 hours, followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg per kg of body weight over the next 16 hours. Your doctor will determine the exact doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Red spots on the skin and itching.
  • Severe breathing problems.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Dizziness.
  • Sweating.
  • Feeling unwell, fever.
  • Reactions at the injection site, leakage of infusion fluid from the blood vessel.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, tongue, and lips.
  • Fast heart rate and low blood pressure.
  • Decreased number of platelets (thrombocytopenia), delayed blood clotting.
  • Signs of kidney damage (decreased urea in blood) or signs of low oxygen in the blood, such as blue lips, skin, and nails (cyanosis).
  • Liver problems.
  • Anxiety or distress.
  • Pain in the face or eyes, seizures (convulsions).
  • Swelling of the eyes, blurred vision.
  • High blood pressure, widening of blood vessels, skin redness, sudden fainting.
  • Cough, chest pain or tightness, respiratory or cardiac arrest, wheezing due to narrowed airways, bronchospasm, shortness of breath.
  • Joint pain.

Important Warnings

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can happen, especially at the start of treatment.
  • If you have asthma or a history of allergies, you have a higher risk of breathing problems (bronchospasm). Your doctor will monitor you closely.
  • Very rarely, severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson or Lyell's syndrome) have been reported. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any skin changes.
  • If you weigh less than 40 kg, your doctor will carefully determine the amount of fluid you receive, as too much fluid can lead to low sodium and seizures.
  • High doses of acetylcysteine can affect blood clotting, meaning it might take longer for wounds to stop bleeding.

  • In children under 2 years old, this medicine can loosen mucus, but their ability to cough it up might be weak, which could block airways. The doctor will take action if needed.
