Absenor contains sodium valproate and is used to treat epilepsy and mania, a state of extreme excitement or overactivity.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. A common starting dose for adults is 600-750 mg per day. The usual daily dose ranges from 1000 mg to 2000 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 2000 mg per day unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Your dose is set individually.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Shakiness; feeling tired, sleepy, dizzy, or having a headache; upset stomach (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, especially at first); changes in appetite or weight; confusion, memory problems; temporary hair loss, nail problems, or menstrual pain; also, low blood platelets (which can cause bruising or bleeding).
RARE
  • Severe liver damage or inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) with symptoms like severe tiredness, repeated vomiting, stomach pain, or yellow skin/eyes.
  • Serious skin reactions such as severe rashes, blisters, peeling skin, or flu-like symptoms.
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., very low white or red blood cells), problems with blood clotting, or immune system disorders like lupus.
  • Kidney problems or reduced urine output, bedwetting.
  • Hormonal changes, such as increased male hormones in women (causing excess hair, acne), irregular periods, polycystic ovaries, low body temperature, obesity, or low carnitine levels.
  • Balance or coordination problems, tingling or numbness in hands/feet, temporary Parkinson's-like symptoms, worsening seizures, abnormal behavior, learning difficulties, speech problems, psychosis, anxiety, depression, or coma.
  • Swelling in legs/feet (edema), inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), bone thinning or fractures, dark spots on skin.

Important Warnings

  • Absenor can seriously harm an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must use effective birth control throughout your treatment. Contact your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Do not stop taking Absenor without your doctor's advice.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe tiredness, repeated vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, weakness, loss of appetite, yellow skin or eyes, swollen legs, worsening epilepsy, or general illness. These could be signs of serious liver or pancreas problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have balance or coordination problems, severe drowsiness, reduced awareness, or vomiting. These might be due to high ammonia levels in the blood.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide at any time, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you notice severe skin reactions like blisters, skin peeling, rashes, flu-like symptoms, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

  • Absenor can make you feel sleepy or dizzy, especially at the start of treatment or if taken with other medicines. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Low serum albumin levels increase the response. Consider potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia och hematological changes. Monitor liver function. (updated 10.11.2025)
