How to Use

Dosage

For adults with epilepsy, the usual starting dose is 600-1500 mg daily. For mania, the recommended starting dose is 750 mg daily, and the average daily dose is usually between 1000 mg and 2000 mg.

Method

Absenor prolonged-release tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or break them.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, but it usually does not go over 3000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea, especially when you start treatment.
  • Headache, feeling sleepy, or dizziness.
  • Temporary hair loss or shaking (tremor).
  • Changes in weight (either gaining or losing weight).
RARE
  • Swelling in your feet and legs (edema), or having a lower-than-normal body temperature.
  • Bone problems, such as bones becoming weaker (bone loss) or breaking easily.
  • Problems with memory, speech, or coordination (difficulty moving smoothly).
  • Infertility in men (usually temporary).

Important Warnings

  • Absenor can seriously harm an unborn baby. Women who can become pregnant must use effective birth control throughout Absenor treatment. If you plan to get pregnant or think you might be pregnant, talk to your doctor right away.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe tiredness, repeated vomiting, intense stomach pain, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. These could be signs of serious liver or pancreas issues.
  • Get urgent medical attention if you develop severe skin rashes, blisters, or skin peeling, often with fever, flu-like symptoms, or swollen lymph nodes.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if your seizures get worse or happen more often.

  • Report any unusual bruising or bleeding to your doctor, as this could be a sign of blood problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Low serum albumin levels increase the response. Consider potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia och hematological changes. Monitor liver function. (updated 10.11.2025)
