Absenor is a medicine containing sodium valproate, used to treat epilepsy and mania, which is a type of mood disorder.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose. For epilepsy, adults usually start with 600 mg daily. For mania, the typical starting dose is 750 mg, and the usual daily dose is between 1000 mg and 2000 mg.

Method

Take Absenor oral solution or drops by mouth. Drops can be mixed with a small amount of fruit puree.

Important

The recommended maximum daily dose for adults is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting (especially at start), diarrhea
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, agitation, trouble concentrating, memory loss
  • Tremors, muscle stiffness, involuntary movements, unsteady walking
  • Temporary hair loss, nail problems, allergic reactions
  • Weight changes (gain or loss), menstrual pain
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), low platelets (easy bruising/bleeding), low sodium in blood
  • Gum problems, mouth inflammation
  • Involuntary eye movements, involuntary urination
RARE
  • Severe liver or pancreas problems (with symptoms like severe vomiting, yellow skin/eyes, extreme tiredness)
  • Very serious skin reactions (rashes, blisters, peeling skin, fever, flu-like symptoms)
  • Severe allergic swelling (angioedema), changes in consciousness (coma), severe drowsiness, reduced alertness
  • Severe breathing problems (fluid in lungs), low body temperature, swollen hands/feet
  • Blood cell disorders (low white blood cells, general low blood cells, problems with clotting), lupus (a rare skin disease)
  • High ammonia in blood, underactive thyroid, hormonal imbalances, low carnitine levels, obesity, high insulin, low HDL cholesterol
  • Kidney problems, reduced or excessive urination, bedwetting
  • Temporary Parkinson's-like symptoms, balance/coordination problems, tingling/numbness, worsening seizures, speech problems, learning difficulties, trouble sleeping, abnormal behavior
  • Psychosis, anxiety, depression, temporary memory loss, double vision, deafness
  • Bone thinning (osteoporosis), fractures, abnormal hair/skin changes (e.g., darker patches)
  • Male infertility (often temporary), inflammation of small blood vessels

Important Warnings

  • Absenor can seriously harm an unborn child if taken during pregnancy. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control throughout treatment. Talk to your doctor if you plan to get pregnant or think you might be.
  • Do not stop taking Absenor without your doctor's advice, as your condition might get worse.
  • Do not use Absenor if you are allergic to sodium valproate or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not use Absenor if you have liver disease, a history of severe liver inflammation in your family, a rare metabolic disease (porphyria, urea cycle disorder), certain mitochondrial diseases, or untreated carnitine deficiency.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get severe vomiting, extreme tiredness, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes, swollen feet, or if your epilepsy gets worse. These could be signs of serious liver or pancreas problems, or high ammonia levels in your blood.

  • Get medical help immediately if you notice severe skin rashes, blisters, peeling skin, fever, flu-like symptoms, or swollen lymph nodes, as these can be signs of very serious skin reactions.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, or if your seizures get worse or happen more often.
  • Inform your doctor if you have bleeding problems, unusual bruising, or kidney problems. Your doctor may need to check your blood.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Low serum albumin levels increase the response. Consider potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia och hematological changes. Monitor liver function. (updated 10.11.2025)
