Abbonate is an antidepressant containing tranylcypromine, used to treat severe depression in adults when other treatments have not been effective.

How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is half a tablet (10 mg) once daily in the morning. The recommended daily dose is 1–2 tablets.

Method

Swallow tablets with a glass of water. The tablets can be divided into two equal halves by pressing down on the middle of the tablet on a hard surface.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3 Abbonate tablets (up to 60 mg/day).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Insomnia, sleep disturbances
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure upon standing
  • Anxiety, agitation, restlessness
  • Dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue
  • Palpitations
  • Weight gain, weight loss, weakness
RARE
  • Sudden increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis) with fast heartbeat, facial and neck redness, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Anemia, decreased number of blood cells
  • Psychological dependence
  • Seizures
  • Swelling due to fluid retention (edema)
  • Constipation, diarrhea
  • Sweating
  • Muscle cramps, muscle pain
  • Orgasm, erection, and ejaculation disorders
  • Hallucinations, confusion
  • Nerve pain (polyneuropathy)
  • Blurred vision
  • Abnormal liver function, increased liver enzyme activity
  • Hair loss
  • Allergic skin reactions
  • Joint pain
  • Decreased urine production
  • High body temperature
  • Suicidal thoughts, self-harming behavior
  • Drowsiness, tremors
  • Tinnitus
  • Nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling cold
  • Exhaustion

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to tranylcypromine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma) or gastrointestinal cancer (carcinoid tumors).
  • If you have or recently had heart or blood vessel problems, such as a recent stroke.
  • If you have severe, uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • If you have liver or kidney failure or disease.

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide – contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as aggression, hallucinations, coma, fast heartbeat, or diarrhea – seek immediate medical attention.
  • Avoid tyramine-rich foods and drinks (e.g., aged cheeses, processed meats, alcohol) during treatment and for 14 days after, as they can cause dangerously high blood pressure.
  • This medicine should not be used by children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
