This medicine is used to treat HIV infection in adults, teenagers, and children who weigh at least 25 kg.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than one tablet per day.

RARE
  • Swelling of your eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, which can make it hard to swallow or breathe.
  • Low number of white blood cells (seen in blood tests), which can increase your risk of infections.
  • Low number of platelets (seen in blood tests), which can cause easy bruising or longer bleeding.
  • Liver problems like jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), enlarged or fatty liver, or hepatitis. You may feel sick, have yellow skin/eyes, pale stool, dark urine, or severe stomach pain.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). You may have severe stomach pain that spreads to your back, a swollen and tender belly, feel sick, and generally unwell.
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). You may have muscle pain (especially in shoulders, thighs, or lower back), weakness, trouble moving your arms or legs, dark urine, or little to no urine.
  • Deep, fast, or difficult breathing, drowsiness, numbness or weakness in arms/legs, feeling sick, being sick, and stomach pain. These can be signs of too much lactic acid in your blood.
  • Bone marrow problems where your body can't make new red blood cells (seen in blood tests). You might feel very tired, sleepy, and unusually pale.
  • Rash with blisters that look like small target spots (dark center, lighter ring, dark outer ring) (erythema multiforme).
  • Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or a very severe form where more than 30% of the skin peels off (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Numbness or tingling sensation in the skin.
  • Low number of red blood cells (anemia), seen in blood tests.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels, seen in blood tests.
  • Increased levels of an enzyme called amylase, seen in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • This medicine contains abacavir, which can cause a serious allergic reaction. If you get a rash or other symptoms like fever, shortness of breath, sore throat, cough, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme tiredness, or generally feeling unwell, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately. If your doctor confirms it was an allergic reaction, you must never take abacavir or any medicine containing abacavir again, as it could be life-threatening.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems or have had hepatitis B or C.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • This medicine might increase your risk of heart disease. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, smoke, or have high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss pregnancy plans with your doctor. If you have HIV, you should not breastfeed.
