How to Use

Dosage

One tablet once a day for adults, teenagers, and children weighing at least 25 kg.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is one tablet.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Hypersensitivity reaction (if serious, stop medicine and contact doctor)
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Fever
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Joint pain
  • Cough
  • Irritated or runny nose
  • Skin rash
  • Hair loss
RARE
  • Low red or white blood cell count (anemia or neutropenia)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Decreased blood cells important for clotting (thrombocytopenia)
  • Liver problems (like yellow skin/eyes, enlarged or fatty liver, inflamed liver)
  • Pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas)
  • Muscle tissue breakdown
  • Increased levels of an enzyme called amylase
  • Numbness or tingling skin sensation
  • Weakness in arms and legs
  • Rash with blisters resembling small targets (erythema multiforme)
  • Widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood)
  • Bone marrow failure to produce new red blood cells (pure red cell aplasia)

Important Warnings

  • You must read and understand the serious allergic reaction warning in section 4. If you have a severe allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) to abacavir, do NOT take this medicine again. Taking it again could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to abacavir, lamivudine, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have moderate or severe liver disease, or if you have had liver disease (including hepatitis B or C) in the past.
  • Tell your doctor if you are severely overweight (especially if you are a woman).
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes and use insulin.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, if you smoke, or if you have any condition that increases your risk of heart disease (like high blood pressure or diabetes).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice, as irregular use can increase the risk of a severe allergic reaction.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Discuss this with your doctor.
