How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 25 kg, the usual dose is 600 mg per day. This can be one 300 mg tablet twice a day, or two 300 mg tablets once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water. You can take them with or without food. If you cannot swallow a whole tablet, you can crush it and mix it with a small amount of food or drink and take it right away.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and children weighing at least 25 kg is 600 mg.

  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity)
  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Rash
RARE
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Severe skin reactions, like blisters or peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood)

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction. If you get a rash or at least two of these symptoms (fever, trouble breathing, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea/stomach pain, severe tiredness/body aches), stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor right away.
  • Always carry the special warning card from the package. It reminds you and healthcare staff about the risk of this allergy.
  • Abacavir might slightly increase the risk of heart problems. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, smoke, or have high blood pressure or diabetes. Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel unwell, as this medicine can affect your ability to focus.
  • This medicine is not advised during pregnancy because it might harm the unborn baby.

  • Do not breastfeed if you have HIV, as the virus can pass to the baby. Also, a small amount of this medicine may pass into breast milk.
